About & methodology
Where the numbers come from, how they're checked, and when they're updated.
Who makes this
SeparationMath is an independent site made by a recently separated service member. It is not connected to any government agency.
Methodology
- Every rate and rule comes from an official source: tsp.gov, va.gov, irs.gov, the Defense Department, DFAS, or the U.S. Code and Code of Federal Regulations. Each calculator lists its sources and the data year.
- Formulas are checked with automated tests against official worked examples, for example the 38 CFR 4.25 combined ratings table (all 684 cells), VA's published payment examples, and the DoD Financial Management Regulation separation pay example.
- Calculators simplify: they don't cover every exception, and they can't see your full tax situation.
Update schedule
- December 1: VA compensation rates (cost-of-living adjustment)
- January: IRS tax brackets, military pay tables, BAH
- August 1: GI Bill rates
